Waqf Movement
The outstanding achievement of the ongoing Waqf Movement is the
Sibtenabad Imambara which the Shias have got after many years .
It is important to mention that Maulana Kalbe Jawad Imam-e-Juma
Lucknow was struggling along with the members of the Community to
get the ownership and control over this Imambara.
This Imambara was constructed by Nawab Wajid Ali Shah. But the British
captured this Imambara in 1857 and converted it into church.Later
on the Church was removed but the Shias were denied the permission
for Azadari and the Government had opened two offices here.

Now
they have been removed and he Imambara is handed over to Shias.
Shias demanded last year that the Shia Waqf properties be protected
and the monuments, which come under Shia Waqf Board, be conserved.
There are mass irregularties in the Husainbad
and Allied trust. Property and other valuable items of Husainabad
worth crores of rupees have been sold or stolen. The Government
and other land Mafia illegally occupy the area of land that falls
under the Shia Waqf.
The District Magistrate residence, the Senior Superintendent of
Police office, the Governor's House , Lucknow Development Authority
office, the Jawahar Bhawan, the Imambara Sibtanabad and the Laxman
Mela Ground are property of the Shia Waqf board but have been illegaly
occupied by the Government.
Although the District Magistrate is the chairman of the Husainabad
Trust it is unfortunate that he has done nothing to protect or improve
the Waqf. |

Memorandum to Chief Minister
Shias under the leadership of Maulana Syed Kalbe Jawad decided
to organize a token peace March on 13th July 2001 from Imambara
Asifi to the Picture Gallery to attract the attention of Government.
On 13th June, 2002 a token protest was organised at District
Magistrate residence in which a memorandum was handed over to
the Chief Minister. The memorandum demanded the dissolution
of the Waqf Board conducting a Central Bureau enquiry into the
mass irregularities of the Waqf Board and the conservation of
the Waqf buildings. This was to be done in 15 days time but
the government did nothing and has continued its indifferent
attitude

Memorandum to Prime Minister
On the appeal of
Maulana Syed Kalbe Jawad to increase the pace of the Waqf Movement
the Shias last year, submitted a memorandum to the P.M. Atal
Behari Vajpayee. Two lakh Shias signed the memorandum on a piece
of 600 metre long by 1 meter wide cloth. Nothing came out of
it but false assurances.
Noted Shia cleric Maulana Syed Kalbe Jawad again met the Prime
Minister in New Delhi and apprised him of the demands of the
Shia community but there was no result.

|
Shia cleric Maulana Syed Kalbe Sadiq filed a writ petition before
the Lucknow bench of the Hon'ble Allahabad High court seeking appointment
of a Commission of Enquiry in this regard. The Hon'ble high Court
had even appointed Mr. Justice U.C. Srivastava, a retired High Court
Judge but the State Government filed a special petition before the
Supreme Court against the High Court order.
The attitude of the Government is vivid proof that it is solely
responsible for the irregularities in the Waqf Board. |

Shia Demonstrate
When the government did not act to the demand of the Shia community
and the deadline of 15 days had expired, Shia decided to stage a
massive demonstration at the P.M's visit on the 28th of June 2002.
The Administration was extra harsh
on the Shias but still as per the programme the Shias under
the guidance and leadership of Maulana Syed Kalbe Sadiq, Maulana
Syed Kalbe Jawad, Maulana Raza Husain, Maulana Saif Abbas, Maulana
Khadim Husain courted arrest and demonstrated near the Vidhan
Sabha and the Imambara Asafi.

After the success of these programme a decision was taken by
the Shia community at a meeting called by Maulana Syed Kalbe
Jawad that all the historical buildings belonging to the Shias
would be closed from August 16th 2002 onwards in protest against
the Government's apathy. |
 |
The Movement Now
The "Waqf Movement" or "Tehreek-e-Awqaf" which is going on in Lucknow
under the Leadership of Maulana Syed Kalbe Jawad has achieved a
nominal success till date. The repair of the Husainabad gate and
the Chota Imambara has already began.
But still the Archeological
Survey of India and the Husainabad Trust have not awakened from
their long slumber.
